
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men
and women in the United States. Overall, the lifetime risk of developing
colorectal cancer is about 4.3% for men and 4.0% for women. Surgical resection
offers the only potentially curative option for patients with colorectal
and GI cancers.
For many years open surgery, which requires a large incision across the
abdomen, remained as the standard technique for treatment of many abdominal
diseases. With advances in technology, laparoscopic surgery through tiny
